El manga comenzó en junio de 2002 en la revista semanal japonesa Young Jump; pocos meses después la editorial Shūeisha emprendió su recopilación y publicación hasta su final en noviembre de 2005 con el duodécimo volumen. La aceptación obtenida propició su adaptación al anime, que empezó a ser emitido el 25 de julio de 2004, cuando el manga aún estaba inconcluso; por ello, el argumento de ambos formatos diverge a partir del volumen 7 de la historieta y el episodio 12 de la serie, la cual cubre la historia publicada hasta su realización pero ofrece un desenlace completamente diferente al que se escribiría para el manga un año después de la finalización del anime.
Elfen Lied está dirigido a un público adulto dada la cantidad de escenas con desnudos, gore, violencia física y psicológica que presenta, siendo principalmente categorizado en los géneros de seinen, ecchi, terror y drama. Muestra influencias de otros mangas y animes, comoChobits, 3×3 Ojos y Gunslinger Girl, de los que toma prestados el diseño de los personajes, la personalidad de la protagonista o el concepto de niñas con un comportamiento sanguinario, ya sea instintivo o condicionado.

La Corda d'Oro (金色のコルダ Kin'iro no Koruda) es un juego de la serie de rol destinado a un público femenino de la serie Neoromance deKoei. El título proviene de la italiana para la cadena de oro.
La historia está siendo adaptado en un manga de diseñador de personajes del juego, Yuki Kure, que es actualmente serializado en LaLarevista. Una adaptación al anime, titulado La Corda d'Oro: Primo Passo, fue transmitido por primera vez por TV Tokio desde octubre de 2006 a marzo 2007. El anime también se estrenó en Animax. Fue transmitido a través de sus respectivas redes en todo el mundo, incluyendoHong Kong y Taiwán, también la traducción y el doblaje de la serie en Inglés para sus redes de Inglés en el sudeste asiático y el sur de Asiay otras regiones. Sentai Filmworks adquirido los derechos en Norteamérica de la serie, ha lanzado en dos conjuntos de caja de la temporada media, y el streaming es en línea.[1] La primera de un episodio de anime de dos especiales, titulado La Corda d'Oro: Secondo Passo, fue transmitido por la estación de Niños el 26 de marzo de 2009, pero desafortunadamente la temporada termina en un punto culminante.
